Graduate School Overview

Founded in 1968, the California Institute of Integral Studies (CIIS) is a pioneer in higher education offering interdisciplinary, cross-cultural, and applied studies in its three schools: The School of Consciousness and Transformation, the School of Professional Psychology, and the School of Undergraduate Studies. Master's and doctoral degrees are available, as well as a Bachelor of Arts completion degree in Interdisciplinary Studies. The CIIS School of Consciousness and Transformation offers programs in Asian and Comparative Studies, East-West Psychology, Integrative Health Studies, Philosophy, Consciousness, and Cosmology, Social and Cultural Anthropology, Transformative Leadership and Transformative Studies, and Women's Spirituality. The Institute recently launched two MFA programs - Creative Inquiry, Interdisciplinary Arts and Writing and Consciousness. CIIS also offers an advanced certificate in Spiritual Counseling, geared to mental health professionals and pastoral counselors, through its East-West Psychology program. The CIIS School of Professional Psychology offers five master's level concentrations (Community Mental Health, Drama Therapy, Expressive Arts Therapy, Integral Counseling Psychology, and Somatic Psychology) that meet the academic requirements for Marriage and Family Therapy (MFT) licensure in the state of California. CIIS's doctoral program in Clinical Psychology is accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA).

Buildings and Resources

CIIS operates from three buildings in San Francisco's thriving South of Market neighborhood, all within walking distance of the cultural centers of the city. From the famous icon of the Golden Gate Bridge to the art galleries, restaurants, parks, and breathtaking views, the city takes pride in its unrivalled attractions, renowned museums, natural beauty by the Bay, rich multiculturalism, and its unique neighborhoods. Among the Institute's facilities is the Laurance S. Rockefeller Library, containing approximately 35,000 books, 200 print and 1,800 online journals, 600 audiotapes, and a growing video collection, including a special psychotherapy video collection. The Library offers a universe of online information including thousands of online books, journals, dissertations, and disciplinary databases. Most of the Library's key resources are accessible via the Web. The Library is particularly strong in the fields of counseling and psychology, philosophy and religion, East-West comparative studies, social and cultural anthropology, various facets of an integral worldview, and the perennial wisdom. CIIS provides students with two computer labs containing a total of 20 computers. The Institute's School of Professional Psychology runs five award-winning counseling centers in San Francisco that serve as professional training facilities for students and provide community service. The InnerLight Bookstore, art galleries, café and student lounge, rooftop Zen garden, and meditation room are all part of the amenities for students at the Institute
